This is the fifth post in a six-part series about our journey towards B Corp certification in which we share details about the policies and benefit programs from our employee handbook we find most meaningful.

Defining policies and benefit programs is thought-provoking work, especially when it concerns people’s physical and mental well-being. We value health. Our employee handbook and workplace culture reflect that. In this post, we share our Health & Wellness + Menopause Benefit Programs.

We’re grateful to be located in countries where citizens and residents are eligible for taxpayer-funded health coverage from their federal governments. For that reason, our Healthcare Benefit Program is simple and inexpensive. Smith Assembly pays for Canadian employees’ extended medical and dental coverage through our group plan. Employees in Costa Rica, or who prefer different extended benefits, are paid the equivalent premium amount monthly.

In addition to traditional health insurance, we also provide...

Health & Wellness Benefit Program

We Offer Full-Time Employees Money For Self-Care

We all need a little self-care from time to time.

Smith Assembly gives full-time employees $500 CAD per year to invest in their health and wellness in whatever way(s) they choose. To be eligible, employees must still be working for the company on the date the self-care bonus payment is made. Each employee’s self-care bonus will be paid no later than 31 March of the following year and will be taxed appropriately.

Menopause Benefit Program

We Value Team Members At Every Stage Of Life

Aging is a natural part of all of our lives.

People who menstruate will at some point experience menopause, and when they do they’ll most likely need some extra flexibility and/or support. The menopausal transition affects everyone differently, so let us know what you need to get to the other side.

To ease this transition, and help destigmatize and normalize menopause in our society, Smith Assembly buys all team members regardless of their gender or age a copy of What Fresh Hell Is This? by Heather Corinna (or the book of their choice on the topic).

Wellness is personal. Health needs and goals change throughout people’s lives. Flexible programs like these empower our employees to have more control over their physical and mental well-being.
